The Civil Division’s Mental Health attorney prosecutes
involuntary mental health commitments for Tarrant
County residents in need of treatment after being
medically examined and certified as a danger to
themselves or to others. This attorney and two
assistants are located in the Civil Courts Building
with the Protective Orders Unit.
Mental Health commitment cases are filed in the probate
courts and prosecuted weekly in accordance with the
Texas Mental Health Code. In 2001, the Civil Division
handled over 1100 mental health commitments with the
goal of safeguarding both the general public and the
rights of the patients involved.
