The Specialized Services Division of the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office includes assistant district attorneys who represent the State of Texas in involuntary mental health commitments of Tarrant County residents.
These commitments are for people in need of mental health treatment. A person becomes a mental health patient after being examined by two physicians and diagnosed as being a danger to themselves or a danger to others or are unable to care for themselves.
Mental Health commitment cases are filed in the Probate Courts and are heard twice a week. In 2010, the Mental Health Unit handled 2,666 mental health cases. Their goal is to
safeguard both the general public and protect the rights of the patients involved.
The Mental Health office is located on the third floor of the Family Law Center, 200 E. Weatherford Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76196.
